Malala Seeking Suki to Preach Peace in Myanmar
Malala Yusuf Zai has told fellow Nobel Laureate and Myanmar's de facto leader Aung san suki that she's "still waiting" for her to condemn the "tragic and shameful treatment" of Rohingya Muslims.
Malala's statement, which she posted on Twitter earlier today, comes even as violence against the majority Muslim community of Rakhine state in Myanmar has spiked since August. The Rohingya were described by the UNO in 2013 as the one of the most persecuted communities in the world.
"Everytime I see the news my heart breaks at the suffering of the Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar...Over the last several years, I have repeatedly condemned this tragic and shameful treatment. I am still waiting for my fellow Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi to do the same. The world is waiting and the Rohingya Muslims are waiting," wrote the 20-year-old Malala, on Twitter.
In the latest bout of violence since August, as many as 400 people are said to have been killed and some 90,000 refugees have fled to neighbouring Bangladesh, reported Reuters.
The Rohingya have faced decades of persecution in the Buddhist-majority country, where they are not considered citizens, reports the BBC.
Malala finds this unacceptable.
"If their home is not Myanmar, where they have lived for generations, then where is it? Rohingya people should be given citizenship in Myanmar, the country where they were born," said Malala.
